The California First Year Law Students' Examination ("FYLSX" or "Baby Bar") is one of the most difficult tests you will ever take. While testing less than a third of the material of the full bar exam, the FYLSX typically has pass rates of 20% to 30% — because test takers either underestimate the difficulty of the exam or think they can pass it based only on the information they learned in law school.
LawPrism prepares students for the essay portion of the FYLSX. Our online, instructor-led FYLSX Essay Workshops and accompanying FYLSX Essay Frameworks are designed to give you all the substantive information you need to know and a proven approach to writing the FYLSX essays.
- What are the bar graders looking for?
- How much substantive law must I know to write a passing essay?
- How should I organize my essays?
- What study techniques should I use to prepare for the essay portion of the exam?
- How can I improve my essay scores?
- What should I do if I forget the substantive law during the exam?
Mastering the substantive law covered by the essays is not enough to receive passing scores; your essays must be written to show the graders what they want to see.

While using an Issue-Rule-Analysis-Conclusion ("IRAC") format works on the FYLSX, unless your emphasis is correct and you are able to spot issues and apply the relevant law to the given facts, just using IRAC is enough to pass an essay. LawPrism's techniques show you how to break down a fact pattern, isolate all important facts, spot the issues, and write coherent, competent, lawyer-like essays on the exam.

LawPrism is pioneering the use of the Internet to deliver live, interactive bar prep workshops. If you've never experienced distance education before, prepare to be pleasantly surprised. Our workshops are conducted using easy to use cutting-edge technology provided by Cisco WebEx, allowing participants to watch presentations, share documents and applications, tele- and videoconference, chat, take online quizzes, and potentially break out into working groups — all without having to leave the comfort of your home or office and without incurring travel expenses.

LawPrism's Essay Frameworks provide concise templates of all the important points of substantive law that you may need to include in an FYLSX essay, organized into templates to make it easy to spot "Issue Clusters" when writing your essays and earn more points. The FYLSX Essay Framework publication contains Essay Frameworks for Contracts, Torts, and Criminal Law.
